In Loving Memory of Eviton Elijah Brown
and Victims of Violent Crimes 2006
My son Eviton Elijah Brown was born October 17th, 1982 in Miami, Florida. He was the youngest of four children. Affectionately known as "Little E" by family and friends; Eviton was a loving son, brother, father, companion, cousin, nephew and friend to all dear to his heart.
He graduated from Miami Norland Senior High School class of 2001. Eviton was naturally smart and a very fast learner. He channeled his energy into playing Defensive End for Miami Norland Vikings Football team. He was also a proud member of the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Program and New Birth Cathedral of Faith.
In 2002, Eviton pursued his formal undergraduate education at FAMU in Tallahassee, Florida. As a Civil Engineer major, Eviton became a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. In 2005, he was blessed with a daughter, Saidah Brown.
On October 26th, 2006, Eviton was an innocent victim of homicide. He was simply riding in a car when he was fatally wounded. Like many of the victims of homicide, he was not the intended target. The only question I could ask was "What's Going On?". Indeed this was the most devastating and confusing time of my life. I needed answers and I felt there was no where I could turn for help.
My son was the 200th death due to homicide that year. Before the year ended there were an additional fifty-eight murders in Miami. That is equivalent to almost one murder every day over the following two months. I began to wonder how the other families were coping with the death of their loved ones. I felt the need to begin a support system to intercede and help victims of violence and their families get through this horrible ordeal. It was then the thought came to me to reach out to the community to call to action for an end to the violence by bringing light to the issue of our children and other innocent people dying.
This revelation was the beginning of the violence intervention and prevention radio talk show "What's Going On?" Each week on the radio program my three children and I present a topic or issue that focuses on violence intervention and prevention programs and services. Our goal is to reduce violent crimes and the impact of violent crimes on victims and their families through community dialog, information and services. We intercede and connect victims of violent crimes to available resources and services throughout the South Florida Community. In essence we are the voice for victims who are voiceless.
